A not so brief history of Hank J. Wimbleton

Hank J. Wimbleton is the name given to the protagonist of Madness Combat. Originally the character was without a name, but a poster in Madness Apotheosis depicted this name (which was later confirmed by Krinkels himself). Apparently he is a highly trained combatant who uses his skill to effortlessly decimate his opponents, the Agency Against Hank Wimbleton. He does however have trouble defeating the two main opponents, Jesus and Tricky. Hank's past as well as his motives in the series are unknown and have not yet been divulged by Krinkels, but it is suspected that this will become clear in the final animation. As said before, his motives are not clear, so fans are forced to piece together whatever they can from the previous episodes. Hank was also in the possession of his own car for a short period of time. Krinkels has also stated he will be revived one last time.

[edit] Madness Combat

In the original animation, Hank became the protagonist. However, he was nameless and only described as "Our Hero". In the beginning Hank is standing in a park with others nearby. One of them is playing a boom-box (rumors yet to be confirmed say this may actually be Tricky). Hank approaches the boom-box's owner for reasons unknown. The owner punches Hank to the ground and the brawling begins. After defeating a total of 32 opponents, Hank emerges victorious and virtually unscathed.
[edit] Madness Redeemer

In the second Madness animation, Hank is once again the protagonist and deals out hefty damage. He is still nameless in this episode. Hank's goal is to kill the sheriff, but his reasons for doing so are unknown. During the course of the episode, wanted posters are seen but they bear no name, so his identity is still unknown. Hank almost achieved his objective before Jesus shot him through the back of his head, killing Hank for the first time.
[edit] Madness Avenger

Hank appears once more in the third installment in the Madness Combat series. As the intro states, he was "given a second chance"; he was going after the sheriff again. After the incident in the last episode, Hank is now wearing bandages over his head over the place where he was shot. Once again, his goal is to kill the sheriff. He manages to finish the sheriff off this time, but not before he is fatally stabbed through the chest by none other than Jesus.
Hank Wimbleton as he appears in Madness Apotheosis

[edit] Madness Apotheosis

Hank returns in the fourth episode without any real goal: his original target, the sheriff, is now dead. His appearance is also different in that he is wearing bandages across his chest where he was stabbed in the previous episode in addition to the bandages on his head from the previous episode. Though unclear, his objective appears to be to kill Tricky the Clown. He almost accomplishes his objective as he shoots Tricky in the head several times with an MP5, but this fails to stop Tricky for good. Not soon afterwards Jesus appeared and eventually finished Hank off, but not before he detonated a suicide bomb, killing them both.
[edit] Madness Depredation

Hank is still the protagonist in the fifth installment of the series. Hank's appearance is drastically altered. His body is covered in bandages from head to toe and he is wearing a black coat, bandanna, and mask which attempt to conceal his battered body. His new look is rounded off by a pair of red sunglasses akin to those worn by Léon [1] in the eponymous film. Yet again his objective is unclear, but apparently it is to kill Jesus. After a long brawl with Jesus, Tricky eventually appeared at which point reality was "compromised." Tricky eventually gained the upper hand (after defying death twice) and slaughtered Hank by impaling him through the chest with the warning sign and then by tearing his head off and pounding it into the ground.
Hank as he appears in Madness Antipathy

[edit] Madness Antipathy

Hank is miraculously alive in the sixth episode. He was "denied death", (implying he wishes to find peace in death) and revived, probably by Tricky. Hank looks much like he did in the last episode except this time his head is connected to his body by bandages and he's missing his jaw (which was pounded off in the last episode) is replaced by a metal plate; the upper jaw is still intact and exposes his teeth. Also, the wound he received in the previous episode in which Tricky impaled him through the chest with the Warning Sign has been covered over by another metal plate which bears the symbol ">=D", an Internet smiley connected with Krinkels. Due to these fatal wounds, it is reasonable to assume that, at least at this point, Hank is now possibly a zombie. His objective is, once again, unclear, but the episode hints to the fact that he was trying to turn off the Improbability Drive or to kill Tricky. Hank fails to deactivate the Improbability Drive, however, as he finds that the activation button has been taped down by Tricky. The clown then makes his appearance and makes things difficult for Hank, including a case in which he was impaled through the throat with the Warning Sign but was later revived by Tricky.

Eventually Hank cornered Tricky near a cliff face, defenseless, and made his move. Hank chopped into Tricky's head with an axe, shot his body up with a P90 he had picked up along the way, and dropped him over the cliff. But unfortunately, the Improbability Drive brought Tricky back once again, this time as a giant flaming beast. Hank was shown firing at the new foe just before the animation ended, leaving it as the first cliffhanger of the series.

[edit] Madness Consternation

Hank is revived once more by Tricky, after being slaughtered, now looking as if he was completely unharmed, with his trench coat buttoned up, red goggle-like glasses and a new black bandanna. He is also wearing black gloves. Upon being revived (again) Hank is seen saying, "Knock it off!", probably meaning that he wants to stay dead and find peace (also, several posters throughout the animation show phrases such as "He must be abused" most likely written by Tricky). Hank seems to ache on the bloodthirsty side effects of the Improbability Drive in this episode, being more violent than ever (curiously, he also takes more bullets by regular l33t agents in this episode than usual, meaning either he is growing weaker in his heavily wounded body, or the agents are becoming more advanced). Hank is able to wound Tricky and kill a giant 1337 agent known as "Mag-Agent: Torture" in this episode, but is killed by Jesus at the end after a shot in the head by his revolver.
[edit] Madness Inundation

Hank is seen at the very start and end of the animation with Tricky. They remain dead since Madness Consternation and they're just simple cameos.

Yeah I can't wait for MC9.

a not so brief history of jesus (madness)

One of the two main antagonists who face Hank, Jesus Christ was one of the more potent foes until Tricky was "enhanced" by the Improbability Drive. First appearing in the original Madness Combat, Jesus is an obvious reference to Jesus Christ [1], bearing the distinctive halo as well as a beard (which is featured in the Western interpretation of Jesus). Jesus has been seen in every Madness Combat episode to date at some point in the animation. He is an expert swordsman with skills that rival those of Hank. This character also has a number of abilities which makes him decidedly deadlier than the average enemy, those being his above-average strength, ability to float, ability to manipulate and throw objects (usually bodies) with lightning bolts, the ability to ward off bullets, and most of all, his ability to resurrect fallen characters as zombies. Krinkels has said that he "went the way of the sheriff" possibly meaning he will not return. As of Madness Inundation, Jesus has "died" a total of five times.

[edit] Appearances

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
[edit] Madness Combat 1

Jesus made his first appearance in Madness Combat 1 as the main antagonist, putting up much more of a fight than the other enemies around him. His appearance is simple: a normal character with a halo and beard. This episode established his strength (as seen by his ability to pick Hank up and slam him into the ground), his ability to raise people from the dead, his ability to ward off bullets (by the use of a cross), and his powers of levitation. Jesus died in this episode when he was gunned down by Hank near the end of the animation.

[edit] Madness Redeemer

Jesus made a second appearance in the next episode, but only for a short time. One of his two trademark weapons, the Deagle, was first seen in this episode. At this point he also gained a new ability: the power to force and throw people around by the use of the same lightning bolts used in the resurrection of zombies. Jesus was not killed in this episode as he had killed Hank first by the end of it by shooting him through the back of the head while Hank was about to kill the sheriff.
[edit] Madness Avenger

Jesus appeared once again in Madness Avenger. His appearance is the same as before most likely due to the fact that he didn't die in Madness Redeemer (however, his beard was sized down slightly). The second of his two trademark weapons, the 316 sword, was first seen in this episode during the last few scenes, but at the time it lacked the binary code inscribed on it. He first appears standing next to the sheriff when he activates the Improbability Drive. Jesus received his first dramatic wounds in this episode, first when he was shot three times in the chest (the wounds were readily covered up with bandages) and next when he was shot in the face at point blank range with a shotgun, blowing a hole in his head.
[edit] Madness Apotheosis

Jesus made an appearance in Madness Apotheosis for only a short time during the final sequence. His appearance is now noticeably different as he is wearing black aviator sunglasses and has stitches holding the pieces of his head together which were blown apart in the previous episode. He uses both of his trademark weapons at least once during his encounter with Hank (the sword gaining its inscription this time around). After incapacitating Hank with the help of a G36-wielding, zombified 1337 agent, he prepares to shoot Hank in the head just before Hank detonates a suicide bomb, blowing Jesus, and his, body apart.
Jesus as he appears in Madness Apotheosis
Jesus as he appears in Madness Apotheosis
[edit] Madness Depredation

Madness Depredation saw the most action involving Jesus thus far in the series. In this episode, Jesus has a radically different appearance. His head has more stitches embedded in it and his body is wrapped in bandages. His aviator glasses are now tinted with red and he wears a white coat. This appearance is the polar opposite of Hank's in this episode (Hank wears the same bandages and coat except that his is black). Jesus also bares his teeth in an expression of rage and hate. The first time that a mouth was seen on a non-zombie Madness character in Madness. He only uses the 316 sword in this episode. Jesus dies yet again when Tricky "deals with him" (after Hank accidentally shoots him several times while trying to hit Tricky) by tearing the top half of his head off.
The cameo of Jesus in Madness Antipathy
The cameo of Jesus in Madness Antipathy
[edit] Madness Antipathy

Madness Antipathy only included a small cameo of Jesus during the train sequence. After the cars are unlinked from the engine, they are seen rolling up beside a sign with Jesus raking leaves nearby. His appearance is again different in a number of ways. Most evident is that he is lacking the characteristic halo, but whether or not this is of importance is unknown. His head is noticeably shaded, apparently indicating charred or burnt flesh. His bandages are still present, seen at the bottom of a new shirt that reads "I'm Jebus, lol. This is as dressed up as I get." He has also let his beard grow from his mouth to his sideburns, leaving him looking very unkempt (Also, under his glasses, his eyes are bright red, with black circles surrounding them, similar to Tricky Madness 2). It seems that, at this point, Jesus has given up his pursuit of Hank, as noted by his rather docile occupation of raking leaves.
Jesus, at the end of Consternation
Jesus, at the end of Consternation
[edit] Madness Consternation

Jesus does not appear in this animation until the very end, but appears to have increased in skill in his absence (this also proves that he has not given up his pursuit of Hank). He returns with his trademark halo and 316 sword. He now carries a Smith & Wesson Model 500 instead of his usual Deagle. After killing several guards, he stuck the beleaguered Hank with his sword and shot him in the head, all the while saying "Goodnight Hank". When Tricky appeared, he quickly shot the Portable Improbability Drive which made Tricky revert to his previous form, at which point Jesus stabbed him in the head multiple times, killing him.
[edit] Madness Inundation
Jesus, as seen in Madness Inundation
Jesus, as seen in Madness Inundation

In this episode, Jesus takes Hank's place as the main protagonist. He sports the bloody eyes from Tricky Madness 2, and uses his special powers (such as smashing an 1337 agent with a crate, grinding multiple agents to a bloody mess, and ripping an A.T.P. agent in half). Near the beginning of the animation the auditor infects Jesus, which causes him to vomit blood from time to time and change his originally all red eyes to red eyes with black rings around them.

Spoilers end here.
[edit] Origin

The origin of the Jesus character is a rather strange and obscure one. Jesus appeared in the very first episode of Madness Combat as the main antagonist, but the reasons for such are unknown. In an interview with Krinkels, the author said that he included Jesus simply "...Because Jesus Christ is a world renowned pacifist. I just love the idea of a strictly non-violent person shooting the place up and making zombies." His appearance was thus, initially at least, a paradoxical parody not to be taken seriously. But as the series expanded past Krinkels's expectations, the character become more and more vital to the plot, and so Jesus took a more active role in Madness Combat.
[edit] Cameos

* Jesus appeared in Madness Mini 2 in an elevator ride with Al A. Sassin.
* Jesus made an appearance in Maximum Ninja 3 in a painting of The Last Supper.

Krinkles should bring him back on 9.

A not so brief history of tricky the clown

Tricky is one of the three primary characters in Madness Combat. Like the two other characters, Hank and Jesus, Tricky has abnormal and superhuman abilities, but only since the events of Madness Depredation. Tricky, as his name indicates, is a clown who wears face paint which suits his character, but the paint is colored, signifying some type of importance (much like Jesus' yellow halo). Tricky is a wild card; neither the protagonist nor antagonist, he appears to dislike everyone except for the 1337 Crew and other minor characters. First appearing in Madness Redeemer, Tricky has been featured in every Madness Combat animation and short since. Initially a standard character of seemingly little importance, Tricky, over the course of the series, became Hank's most powerful foe. So far Tricky has died a total of six times.

[edit] Madness Redeemer

Tricky made his first appearance in Madness Redeemer roughly half way through the animation. He was a standard character, save for his colored face paint and the M16 he was wielding. Apparently he was in the employment of the sheriff and was sent to protect him after Hank gave chase, but whether or not they were connected in any way is still unknown. Tricky showed up with two other basic enemies who attempted to defeat Hank but were easily swept aside. When the protagonist reached Tricky he easily did away with him, the Clown putting up little resistance whatsoever and only managing to snap off a few shots before he was killed.
[edit] Madness Avenger

Tricky returned in Madness Avenger evidently unharmed (even though he suffered several point blank bullet wounds to his chest in the previous episode). He first appeared after the activation of the Improbability Drive. Wielding an M60 and equipped with a jetpack, he attempted to blast Hank away but failed as he had used an enemy that was down for a human shield. Eventually the weapon ran out of ammunition, which then Tricky fled. Later when the giant marshmallow fell and the sun died, Tricky appeared once more, this time wielding a scimitar. Without putting up much of a fight, Hank cornered him against the marshmallow and impaled him with the warning sign, killing the clown instantly. After Hank departed an unknown force resurrected Tricky as a zombie (it is assumed that the Higher Powers resurrected Tricky as Jesus was nowhere to be found at the time). Pulling the sign out of his chest, Tricky once again attacked Hank, and although putting up more of a fight was eventually shot to death with a Deagle.

[edit] Madness Apotheosis

Tricky returned once more in the sequel, Apotheosis. The intro to the movie shows him donning what appears to be a gray wielders mask as well as gloves which covered his green, zombified hands. Apparently Tricky was Hank's target in this episode. Now the big DJ at Club M, Tricky was presiding over a rave party when Hank busted in and slaughtered the party-goers, shooting Tricky in the face several times (but not killing him) and hacking his way right up to Tricky himself before Jesus came to the scene and wreaked havoc. After Hank did away with both himself and Jesus through the use of a suicide bomb, Tricky simply shrugged, put on the record of the DJ Birdy Bird Dance, and danced the night away (It's this event which hints that he might have once been the Boom-box Man, but his true identity still remains a mystery).
Tricky as he makes a victory stance over Hank's body in Depredation
Tricky as he makes a victory stance over Hank's body in Depredation
[edit] Madness Depredation

Tricky the Clown had his most dramatic change in character in Depredation, the fifth episode of the series. Still "alive" after being shot in the face with an MP5 in Apotheosis, Tricky appeared in the latter half of the episode at the point when Hank fell to the bottom of the ravine. As if to signal his coming, the warning sign tore up and out of the ground and a text appeared as "WARNING: DANGER" and sped away, slamming a 1337 agent to the ground. As the sign moved it tore a rift in the ground which allowed Tricky as well as a handful of 1337 Crew to pop out of the floor. Hank quickly blasted Tricky in the face when he first appeared, but the Clown would not be stopped. A few seconds later, just as Jesus attempted to strangle Hank, the most severe change in the Madness series occurred: Reality was compromised. Tricky suddenly became extremely powerful, actually shaking uncontrollably. Apparently supercharged by the Improbability Drive, Tricky wielded the warning sign and actually was able to launch Hank up onto a precipice.

Quickly turning around, he grabbed the injured Jesus and tore the top half of his head off. Jumping all the way up the cliff, Tricky showed Hank Jesus' severed head and proceeded to do battle with him. Nearly choking the Protagonist with the Sign, Hank landed a few devastating slashes across his chest, but it was not enough. Tricky impaled Hank through the chest with the warning sign (much like Hank did to himself). Still having enough energy left, Hank chopped the top half of Tricky's head off with his katana, taking a portion of the mask and red hair off with it. Seemingly dying, Hank ripped the sign out of him and stood over Tricky's battered body victorious. But this victory was not meant to be. The Clown spontaneously got back up onto his feet with the text "YOU DO NOT KILL CLOWN!" appearing overhead.

In one swift move too fast for even Hank to counter, Tricky tore his head off and pounded it into the ground. Turning to the camera, Tricky threw up his hands making the peace symbols with them as "CLOWN KILLS YOU!" appeared overhead. In the corner a text saying "OMFG" was shown during this time.
Tricky as he appears in the train in Madness Antipathy
Tricky as he appears in the train in Madness Antipathy
[edit] Madness Antipathy

Tricky was, for once, the main foe in Madness Antipathy. Though he didn't appear until the later half of the animation, his presence was known from the start. As Hank was revived, he noticed a Glock and sword laying on the ground alongside a note which read, "Just do what comes natural - T". This would indicate that Tricky revived Hank to let him slay all of the 1337 agents he can until he meets up with Tricky where another note has been left, when Hank reached the console of the Improbability Drive, he attempted to shut it off but found that the button had been taped down. Yet another note was there, this time reading, "Very good! Now catch me if you can, sucka! - T". A moment later the building disintegrated and a steam train with Tricky as its engineer came rolling through, knocking Hank off to the side. Tricky looked much like he did in the last episode, warning sign equipped as well, except this time he was wearing an engineer's hat to accompany his new role. Hank managed to grab on to a train car, however, and eventually fought his way through the 1337 Crew infested train and up to the engine cab where Tricky was. Several times the Clown attempted to halt Hank's progress, but to no avail.

Eventually the train went careening off of a cliff. It crashed on the other end of the chasm and left Hank badly injured, but Tricky was absolutely fine. The Clown, and he appeared to still be in the mood to battle, he then threw Hank a lead pipe so that they could duel. Tricky, wielding the warning sign, easily smashed through the pipe and impaled Hank in the neck which seemed to of killed him for a brief second,

a not so brief history of tricky cont.

so almost immediately Tricky resurrected him. But strangely enough, Tricky continued to fight, only this time Hank having the upper hand, he then fixed the pipe by bending it back to it's original state. After getting close enough to Tricky to knock his engineer's hat off, Hank watched as Tricky fled very far and very quickly and called down a copy of the previous building between himself and Hank. After Hank slaughtered the building's occupants containing recruits and 1337 agents he made his way to the other side, he found Tricky absolutely defenseless, buying a hot dog from a vendor's stand. Mercilessly, Tricky was hacked into with an axe and shot up, left to drop over the cliff. But something deemed his death words appeared as they said "INVALID", "NO" "THE CLOWN CANNOT DIE!", the Improbability Drive then summoned him back to life, but instead of the standard clown appearance Tricky was now a giant flaming demon. It had features such as the mask and twin hair pieces, but the likenesses ended there. The demon's whole body was bathed in fire and instead of hands had large, menacing claws.

The episode then ended there; it is the first Madness Combat episode to end with a cliffhanger.
[edit] Madness Consternation
Tricky as a demon in Madness Consternation
Tricky as a demon in Madness Consternation

Tricky is once again the main foe in Madness Consternation. He revives Hank, who is angered by this action, and appears to do this only to make him suffer. Tricky still appears to be an ally of the 1337 Crew, but not their new leader. Tricky spends most of this animation chasing Hank who is fleeing, who barely escapes each assault. A magnification in the animation shows that he has a portable improbability drive in his head (shown when Hank fired a combat shotgun into his face). Towards the end of the episode, he still appears in demon form to Hank, though back to normal size. Hank attempts to strike him with the chainsaw he recently obtained, but it is merely thrown aside by the homicidal clown. The two exchange blows until Hank is thrown through a wall.

Jesus then falls from the building and kills Hank by shooting him in the head, then turns and lands a lethal blow on Tricky's Portable Improbability Drive with the same gun, destroying it. Tricky's demon form degenerates, leaving his battered, zombified body vulnerable. Jesus makes short work of him with a few swings of his 316 sword.
[edit] Madness Inundation
Tricky, as seen in Madness Inundation
Tricky, as seen in Madness Inundation

Tricky is seen at the very end of the animation, together with Hank. They remain dead since Madness Consternation and they're just simple cameos.
[edit] Other Appearances

Tricky also appeared in the two Madness shorts: Tricky bangbanggooberblat and Tricky Madness 2. In both instances Tricky was shown doing something extremely bizarre and has no relation at all to the Madness Combat plot.
[edit] Origin

Tricky's original conception came from a popular Internet meme at the time called "xkittyfroggymeowmeow" created by a popular Newgrounds artist, Dan Paladin. It featured a naked clown with an exposed penis dancing to the song "Sailor's Hornpipe". Shortly after Redeemer was made (and Tricky was shown for the first time) Krinkels made a short animation called Tricky bangbanggooberblat which was featured Tricky smacking Jesus over the head with his own giant erect penis. But the joke quickly faded away as Tricky became a more important character as the series moved on.
